After a decade of wandering to cemeteries unprepared I have finally put together a bag of things to keep in my car – those things I have been caught without MORE than once.

Water and towels for cleaning gravestones (I’m talking about cleaning stones intact and fairly modern – old sandstone stones are an entirely different animal.)

Camera. Flash. Batteries. (After taking this picture, I drove 2 hours, forgot to charge my camera and it died after I took the first picture at the cemetery.)

Paper and something to make rubbings with (I have crayons.)

Knife/scissors – something sharp to cut plants.

Map/directions. Something written down – GPS will only get you so far when searching for country cemeteries. If it’s a large cemetery, a map of it and a general location may be needed to make your trip worthwhile. (Yes, I had to go back into the house to get my written directions after I forgot to put them in the bag.)

Bag to hold everything in.

In Adair County, Kentucky there are two Dunbar Cemeteries – one is Dunbar Hill Community Cemetery where more distant relatives are buried. The other is a small family cemetery where many of our Snows and Dunbars are buried.

According to Elizabeth Dunbar Snow’s obituary, the Dunbar Cemetery is located on what was T. P. Dunbar’s land. T. P. Dunbar is her brother Thomas Paschal Dunbar.

The Dunbar Cemetery

Directions: From the junction of SR 55 and SR 80 at the top of Jamestown Hill in Columbia, KY, go EAST 2.2 miles on SR 80 (toward Russell Springs) to Rose Lane. Turn left on Rose Lane and go .3 miles to Derby Drive. The cemetery is on the left at the intersection of Rose Lane and Derby Drive in what is now the “Churchill Place” housing development. Map to Dunbar Cemetery, Adair, Kentucky.

The county seat of Clinton, Kentucky is Albany.

A fire in 1864 and another in 1980 have destroyed most vital records from the county. (reference)
